The 100 Azores Escudos coin, issued in 1991, pays homage to the poet, philosopher and thinker Antero de Quental, one of the most prominent figures in Portuguese culture and a native of the island of São Miguel, in the Azores. Part of a series of commemorative coins, this issue celebrates the centenary of the death of Antero de Quental (1842-1891), highlighting his crucial role in the intellectual and literary movement of the 19th century.
On the obverse of the coin, we find the effigy of Antero de Quental, with a thoughtful expression, capturing his philosophical depth. The inscription “República Portuguesa” accompanies the portrait, along with the year of issue, 1991. On the reverse, the value “100 Escudos” is centralized, surrounded by graphic elements and the inscription “Antero de Quental 1842-1891”, reinforcing the tribute to the writer.
